Question
My daughter has just graduated from HS, she will be college freshman living away from home starting in August. I am looking for a book(s) to give her about getting a clue about life. She just doesn't get it, I explained she should look into scholorships, etc for additional money and she says she will just take a loan. I explained she should work this summer to have some $$ put away, and she just doesn't get it. She is trying to get a job, but she fills one application out and waits to hear or not to hear from them. It's not that she doesn't want to work, but I don't know. I am at my wits end. Don't get me wrong she is very good kid no trouble, good grades. I have been told I have babied her too much, and she expects me to do everything as I have also done.
Answer
I was kind of like that too....I'd fill out one job application, not get called, get pessimistic and quit. I'd fill out tons of scholarships on those websites, and the problem is, so many people apply for one that it's nearly impossible to get it. You let everyone play, nobody wins. :\ See if you can find some local scholarships for her that would be more likely to notice her. Perhaps if she feels she has a greater chance, she'll fill it out. Trust me, you don't want anymore student loans than you need! I have them and I hate them! When she gets out there, she'll learn quick. I learned within a week what it's like to be an adult and on your own. It's almost like an animal instinct. You notice when you need to do laundry, you get/make food when you're hungry, and you go job hunting like crazy because you don't have money. When you realise you NEED it, you find a way to get it. Since you're probably paying for the house/apartment, food, car, etc. she doesn't feel like she really needs to get money. But when she gets out there and sees the price of gas alone, she'll be trying her hardest to find a job. That's how I was. I learned quick. I didn't get money from my family except for one emergency. I pay my auto loan, etc. Sometimes you just need to be thrown out there before you get it. My family tried with me too....Well I learned. Except for the price of gas, I don't think it's that bad being an adult.
